Abstract

Pronunciation is an important part to communicate in English. Good pronunciation is one of the basic requirements of learners’ competence and also one of the most important features of language instruction. This research is a case study with English Department students in the 7th semester as participants. The objectives of this study are first to figure out the frequent placement errors of word stress in students’ pronunciation and secondly to find out the factors that influence the errors in students’ pronunciation. The methods used in this study were pronunciation tests and interviews. The result showed that students misplaced polysyllable words with three syllables was mostly found in students pronunciation rather than bisyllabic words. The frequency of polysyllable was 69% in the word list item test and 88% in the text item test. In the word list item test all of the students pronounced the word stress incorrectly word correspond, followed by the word museum with only two students pronounced correctly. Besides, the word director and tradition are also most pronounced incorrectly. While, in the text item test the word museum was the most incorrectly pronounced by the students with frequency occur twentyeight times from thirty students, followed by the word correspond, director, tradition and November. Two factors that influenced the students’ mispronunciation, were Intralingual and Interlingual Interference. The possible factors of the misplaced words are 99% from intralingual interference which comes from the effect of the target language. Whether, the interlingual interference comes from students’ mother tongue, Javanese with 1%.
