Abstract

This study aims to determine the description of the implementation of the physical chemistry practicum based on multiple intelligences, analyze the profile of student science process skills, know the student response, and knowing the relationship between science process skills and the multiple intelligences approach. This type of research is a mix method, with a concurrent embedded design. This research was conducted at the Sub Laboratory of Physical Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, UNNES. The time for this research was in the even semester of the 2018/2019 academic year. The subjects of this study were students of the Chemistry study program class of 2017 who participated in the physical chemistry practicum course, a total of 66 students, consisting of two classes. Students did three experiments, including: (1) Solubility and coefficient of strong electrolyte activity; (2) Determination of reaction rates and reaction rate constants; (3) Adsorption isotherm. Physical chemistry practicum based on multiple intelligences begins with a multiple intelligences test to find out the types of intelligence possessed by students. Based on the test, class 1 and class 2 students had eight types of intelligence with almost the same percentage. The eight intelligences include: linguistic intelligence, logical-mathematical intelligence, spatial intelligence, kinesthetic intelligence, musical intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, intrapersonal intelligence, and naturalist intelligence. The steps for the physical chemistry practicum based on multiple intelligences are the pretest, the physical chemistry practicum, the presentation of the lab results, the preparation of the practicum report, and the response. Eight types of student intelligence are facilitated in the implementation of physical chemistry practicum. The aspects of student science process skills observed in this study include: hypothesizing, applying concepts, making observations, grouping, planning experiments, using tools and materials, predicting, communicating, interpreting, and asking questions. Class 1 and class 2 students experienced an increase in the percentage of their science process skills starting from experiment 1, experiment 2, to experiment 3. The average criteria for students' science process skills were initially on the first experiment, then increased to be high in the second and third experiments. The results of the analysis of the student response questionnaire to the multiple intelligences practicum showed that 88.24% of students gave very good responses and 11.76% of students gave good responses. Based on the n-gain test and hypothesis testing, it can be concluded that the physical chemistry practicum based on multiple intelligences can improve students' science process skills.
