Abstract
Environmental problems cannot be avoided in big cities including Semarang City. All environmental problems that occur need to be raised in learning, one of them through the development of teaching materials based on socioscientific issues. This study aims to describe the characteristics of teaching materials based on socioscientific issues, to test the validity of teaching materials by material experts and media experts, to test the effectiveness of teaching materials from learning outcomes and students' environmental care attitudes, and to analyze student and teacher responses to the development of teaching materials in readability and practicality. This research is a Research and Development (R&D) method with the Sugiyono’s development model. To determine the validity of teaching materials by material experts and media experts, tested using a questionnaire. The effectiveness of teaching materials on student learning outcomes was tested by One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design and N-gain testing, students' environmental care attitudes were tested using a questionnaire. Student and teacher responses to readability and practicality of teaching materials were tested using a questionnaire. This research was conducted at SMA Setiabudhi Semarang in the second semester of the 2019/2020 school year. The results showed that the characteristics of the results of the development of socioscientific issues based teaching materials were the column, takukah kamu, mari kita renungkan, socioscientific issues, diskusi dan evaluasi, cermati kembali, and realitas lokal: terjadinya banjir dan rob Semarang akibat perubahan lingkungan. The results of the validation of teaching materials by material experts and media experts obtained very valid criteria. The response to the readability of teaching materials by students and teachers obtained very good criteria. Teaching materials developed effectively improve student learning outcomes and environmental care attitudes with very caring criteria. The response of the practicality of teaching materials by students and teachers obtained very practical criteria. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the teaching materials based on socioscientific issues developed based on the local reality of environmental problems in Semarang City are valid, effective, and practically used in learning biology for environmental change materials.
