Abstract

The next generation of the nation are children who can survive independently and virtuous. As the nation's successor, children must grow and develop into adults who are physically and spiritually healthy, educated, have good morals, and commendable character. It is necessary to give children affection and proper guidance to achieve the desired condition. However, there are still many children who are less fortunate in getting these needs. These disadvantaged groups of children are, for example, street children. Therefore, these street children are given a place to fulfill the necessities they do not get in the family. Thus, activities and assistance from volunteers that support street children's training so that they can live independently are needed. This research was conducted to determine the activities of the children assisted by Rumah Pintar, which consists of street children, who were directly aided by volunteers, to nurture their independence so that they can leave street life. The focus of this research included (1) the profile of Rumah Pintar Bang Jo PKBI Central Java, (2) the teaching of the value of independence to street children assisted by Rumah Pintar Bang Jo PKBI Central Java, and (3) the benefits of Rumah Pintar Bang Jo on street children's independence. Qualitative research methods were used in this study. The data analysis technique was conducted inductively, where the pattern of thinking that is repeated is based on observing specific problems, then drawing general conclusions. The results of the research showed that (1) the location of the analysis regarding Rumah Pintar at Kp. Pungkuran No. 403 Kauman, Semarang City, has 5 volunteers and 116 assisted children, (2) Rumah Pintar can facilitate assisted children to find work and a place for training so that they can leave street life and have a better living condition, and (3) activities implemented in Rumah Pintar were routine activities as a means of shaping the independence of the assisted children and aim to develop talents and interests of the assisted children according to their abilities. Rumah Pintar has functions to train, develop, and provide beneficial points for street children, such as business skills, talents, interests, education for children aged 4-6 years called kelompok bermain, education for children aged 7-12 years is called a study group, and libraries. Activities at Rumah Pintar can be executed well with sufficient numbers of volunteers, well-planned programs, and well-organized schedules.
