Abstract

This research aims to describe the feeling of imprisonment endured by African American women as a result of women subordination in Angelou‘s Woman Work. This research uses qualitative analysis focusing on the word or explanatory reasoning. The data are collected by reading, identifying, interpreting and iventorying using the socialist feminism theory and interactive-system approach by relating the gender division labor and alienation to see the evidence of imprisonment in the poem. The results of this research indicate that the identification of the women’s subordination was a complicated combination between a personal battle of one’s will to resist the oppression or just to obey it, which nurtured the patriarchal culture in order to keep control of the power within the capitalist system. It leads to imprisonment that refers to how the woman in the poem is bound to obey the system she was trapped in. The imprisonment evolves around how gender affected the division of labor in the work place leading to the disparity of the salary received and inequity of work distribution for women. In addition, alienation of women both sexually and intelectually also broaden the scope of imprisonment because women experience themselves not as selves but as others.
