Abstract

This study aims at investigating the use of picture series and jigsaw strategy to help the students in writing of explanation text which implemented by the English teacher in the action. In this case, 33 students of XI Social 3 in SMA 3 Demak faced difficulties in writing explanation text such as confusion in constructing sentences, developing ideas, and distinguishing the structure of text types. Another problem faced by students was the lack of attention caused by the lack of variation in the material delivery. In this research, the researcher collaborated with the English teacher to help students’ writing by using picture series and jigsaw strategy. The treatments were given by the English teacher and observed by the researcher using the material and teaching strategies that have been discussed and directed together. A mix-method was used with an explanatory sequential design and one group pre-test�post-test design in action to attain the goal of this research namely to find out the use of picture series and jigsaw strategy improving students’ writing, the implementation of the medium of picture series and jigsaw strategy in the teaching of explanation text writing, and students’ perception after the implementation of picture series media and jigsaw strategy. The result after the implementation showed that the picture series media and jigsaw strategy used in explanation text writing proved by the students’ average score increased from the pre-test to post-test, which was 43.58 to 69.30. The implementation of picture series media and jigsaw strategy in explanation text writing showed three benefits: picture series and jigsaw strategy helped the students develop their learning ability in explanation text writing, caught students’ interest, and created a fun learning atmosphere. The students positively perceived the use of picture series media proved by the percentage of the average score on students’ response to the learning of explanation text writing using picture series media were 77.37% categorized as high. In conclusion, the findings which obtained through several instruments or gathering data were supporting each other and proved that picture series helped students’ in improving their explanation text writing which made the triangutaion data did not use in this research.
