Abstract

Due to the English language taught as a foreign language in Indonesia, so that there are some non-exist English sounds in Bahasa Indonesia. Thus, it caused problems for students in pronouncing English properly. This study aimed to investigate the students’ accuracy of pronouncing English dental fricative sounds [θ] and [ð] and to investigate how are the problems they faced and the most problematic sounds for them to pronounce. The subjects of this study were 32 students of eleventh grades of MAN SALATIGA. A descriptive qualitative study was used as the method in this study to determine the students’ accuracy, problems, and the most problematic sounds for the students. The data collecting method in this study was audio recording. The findings showed that the students’ accuracy in pronouncing English dental fricative sound [θ] was 5.6% of accuracy and it was categorized as poor. Besides, the students’ accuracy was good in pronouncing the sound [ð] with 66.7% of accuracy. The problem faced by the students in pronouncing targeted sounds found in this study was belonged to sound substitutions. They substituted the sound [θ] with others sounds such as, [ð], [t], [d], [tʃ], [th], [nð], [h], [tʔ ], and [tɪ], while the sound [ð] was substituted with [θ], [t], [d], [tʃ], [ðh], [nð], [nd], [s], and [h]. Furthermore, sound [θ] was found to become the most problematic for the students to pronounce.
