Abstract

This study aimed to find the difficulties faced by test takers in Reading Comprehension section of TOEFL and describe the teaching and learning process of test-taking strategies of Reading Comprehension section of TOEFL. This study used qualitative research design. The type of data used was document analysis and observation. The subject of the study was the students or test takers and teacher or tutor at EduBright (EB) Institute Semarang. The researcher used O’Malley and Chamot (1990) and Cohen (2007) to categorize the strategies. The study showed the range of difficulty faced by students or test takers are Answer Implied Questions (57.14%), Find Definition from Structural Clues (50%), Answer Transition Questions, Determine Meanings from Words Parts, Use Context to Determine Meanings of Difficult Words, Use Context to Determine Meanings of Simple Words (33.3%), Find “Unstated” Details (16.7%), Determine Where Specific Information is Found (16.7%), Answer Main Idea Questions Correctly (8.3%), Find Pronoun Referents (0%). In teaching and learning strategies, Planning Strategies were applied in Answer Main Idea, Answer Stated Detailed, Determine Meanings from Word Parts, Answer Implied, Answer Transition, Find Unstated Details, Find Pronoun Referents, and Find Definitions from Structural Clues skills. Monitoring Strategy was applied in Answer Main Idea, Answer Stated Detailed, Determine Meaning from Word Parts, Answer Implied Detail, Find “Unstated” Details skills. Comprehending strategy was used in Answer Main Idea, Answer Stated Detailed, Answer Implied Detail, Answer Transition, Find “Unstated” Details, and Using Context Clues to Determine Meaning skills. Retrieval strategy was applied in Determine Meaning from Word Parts, Find Pronoun Referents and Find Definitions from Structural Clues skills. Socioaffective strategy was applied in Determine Meaning from Word Parts skill, and Test-Wiseness Strategies was found in Answer Main Idea, Answer Stated Detailed, and Determine Meaning from Word Parts skills. Based on findings, the researcher found that there is still high percentage of difficult skills faced by students or test takers and more than one strategies were applied in almost every skill of Reading Comprehension section of TOEFL.
