Abstract

There are idiomatic expressions in every language, and often times, those idiomatic expression cannot be translated literally. Therefore, translation plays an important role in transferring the meaning. We have to understand the cultural background of the language in order to grasp the intended meaning of said idioms. There are a lot of cultural influence in language usage, particularly in literary works such as novels, dramas, and movies. The writer uses English and Indonesian subtitle of The Mentalist season five for the object of this research. In this research, the writer wants to distinguish the type of idiomatic expression and their level of semantic equivalence from English, specifically American English, into Indonesian. There are 125 data found by the writer in this research. Those data are analyzed based on their idiom types and their level of semantic equivalence. There are six idiom types in this research which is Simile, Binomial, Proverb, Euphemism, Cliché and Fixed Statement, and Other Language. Cliché and Fixed Statements dominates the idiomatic expression in the Mentalist season five There are five types of semantic equivalence, which is Equivalence at Word Level, Equivalence Above Word Level, Grammatical Equivalence, Textual Equivalence, and Pragmatic Equivalence
