Abstract

In doing a translation activity, especially translating directive speech acts in a novel which has its own difficulties, translation techniques are needed to solve the problems occur in the translation process. One of the translation techniques that useful and often used in translation activity is addition technique. This study intended to analyze the implementation of addition technique in the translation of word, phrase, clause, and sentence in the directive speech acts in Northanger Abbey novel. In conducting this research, the writer employed descriptive qualitative method. To categorize the directive speech acts in this study, she used the theory of directive speech acts proposed by Bach and Harnish (1979). Furthermore, she used Nida’s addition technique (1964) theory to analyze the implementation of addition technique in the translation of directive speech acts in the novel. The result of the study shows that from 108 data analysis consist of 54 translation of words, 58 translation of phrases, 5 translation of clauses and 5 translation of sentences, it was revealed that the addition technique in the translation of word, phrase, clause, and sentence in the directive speech acts implemented in the different ways. It was implemented according to the problems occured in the translation which also had different needs in the translation. Moreover, the implementation of addition technique can be seen from the use of the different kinds of addition technique which each of them showed how the addition technique implemented to solve the problems in the translation.
