Abstract

Nowadays, everything goes further forward. Not to mention; information. It seems like there is no more border between countries. Cultural changes, history, etc., we can get them very easily via internet, library, class, and any other possibility. Before those information delivered to us, there is translator who help us by rendering it into our language. However, it is not that easy to translate something which has so many differences with our point of view, culture, arbitrary system, etc. Translator will always find some problem in translating but there will always solution to overcome it as well. Novel, is one of the popular culture that entered into Indonesia and one of the most well-known artwork. This study analyzed the modulation found in English – Indonesian translation novel by Jeff Kinney entitled Diary of a Wimpy Kid “The Last Straw”. This study is qualitative research. The data which could be a word, phrase, or sentence would be analyzed to find the five categories of modulation. I found 69 data in the novel: 7 data of generalization, 7 data of specification, 35 data of substitution, 8 data of reversal, and 12 data of deviation. From this study, I concluded that modulation can happen because there is no equivalent between the source text and target text, also the different point of view and cultural differences between two languages. Substitution is mostly used by translator and it is effectively delivered the meaning of the source text to the reader. I hope that this study can help readers who are interested about modulation in translation.
