Abstract
This study analyzes the movement called Civil Disobedience which emerges as a response of society dissatisfaction towards the attitude of the authority. The aim of this study is to describe the depiction of Civil Disobedience as a protest towards the authority in the novel through the movement that appears in the novel. The objects of this study are characterization, theme, and conflict found in J.K. Rowling’s novel Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. This study is a descriptive qualitative study with sociology in literature as the approach aiming to reveal and mirror the relationship between elements in the novel with condition in the society. The data of the study are in the form of words, phrases, sentences, and utterances. Those are gathered by reading the novel thoroughly, identifying, inventorying, classifying, and analyzing. The analysis is done by several techniques including exposing, explaining and interpreting. This investigation results in several findings. First is the cause of civil disobedience divided into two parts, external factors and in internal factors. The external factors deal with the attitude of the authority including power abuse, physical abuse, and discrimination. Meanwhile, the internal factor deals with the need of self defense. Second is the implementation of Civil Disobedience reflected in the novel according to several characteristics. First characteristic is conscientiousness which deals with the seriousness and the way to organize it. Publicity which functions as the attention getter from society becomes the second characteristic. However, this characteristic can be tactical rather than practical when it becomes secrecy. The third characteristic is called communication. It becomes the method to spread the information about movement and as the media connecting the movement with the authority. Non violence becomes the fourth characteristic. This is the most important characteristic of this movement since this distinguishes civil disobedience from other similar movements. The last finding is the description of civil disobedience found in the novel as a mirror of today’s society. This includes the similarities and differences between civil disobedience found in the novel and civil disobedience in the real society such as civil disobedience in India led by Mohandas Gandhi, Anti War movement, walkout protests done by students in Detroit and hunger protest in Yogyakarta.
