Abstract

The main objective of this study is to find out whether or not there is a significant difference in achievement between students who are taught speaking expressions in interactional conversation by using digital comics and those who are taught by using a conventional method. In this study, the population was the Seventh Year Students of SMP N 1 Kedungwuni in the academic year 2011/2012. In taking the sample, 68 students were chosen, 34 students from class VII A as the control group, 34 students from class VII C as the experimental group. The research design used was experimental design. Rating scale of assessment speaking was used to assess students’ speaking performance. Before the experiment, the writer held a try- out test that is to get its validity, reliability, level of difficulty and discriminating power. Then he began the research by giving a pre - test to the students. After that, treatments were given to them. Digital comics had been taught to the experimental group and conventional method had been given to the control group. At the end of the research, he gave a post-test to them. The T-test formula was used to determine whether or not there was a significant difference between the means of score of the experimental and the control group. The mean of the post-test of the experimental group was 82.35 which was higher than the mean of post -test of the control group 74.47. The t-test result (4.82) was higher than the t-table (1.67). Since the t-test was higher than the t-table, it could be concluded that there is a significant difference in the students’ score between students who were taught speaking expressions in interactional conversation by digital comics and those who were taught by using a conventional method. Referring to the experience in conducting this research, a suggestion was offered to the teacher to improve the students' ability in mastering expressions in interactional conversation. Digital comics should be used more frequently in teaching learning processes to improve students’ motivation and interest in learning English. By using the colorful pictures, convenient conversation, simple theme and plot, and the interesting characterization, digital comic will attract the students to engage to the material. This result hopefully would motivate teachers to use the digital comics in their classroom, especially when teaching expressions in interactional conversation to the students of junior high school.
