Abstract

The use of flash pictures in this study has a purpose of developing students’ competence in writing recount texts. I used real action in response to a certain problem encountered during the teaching and learning process through cycles of action. Therefore, in this action research I used tenth grade students of X 1 (tenth one) of State Senior High School 2 Slawi in the second semester of the academic year 2011/2012 as the subjects of the research. The objectives of the study are to find out the students’ difficulties in writing recount texts, reason of flash pictures are proposed as media in teaching recount texts, and the effectiveness flash pictures in improving students’ ability in writing recount. This action research needed seven meetings which were divided into pretest and posttest and two cycles. There were two meetings for each cycle, and two meetings for posttest. In the first cycle, the students were introduced with the use of flash pictures in teaching writing recount texts. The second cycle was the betterment of the first cycle. There were some modifications in the second cycle. The research findings showed that the difficulty of the students got most in writing recount texts was grammar because they had difficulty to differentiate whether they should use irregular or regular verbs. The findings also found the development of students’ positive attitude in writing recount text has increased. The students were more attracted, more active, and more interested in studying when they used flash pictures compared to their behavior when they did not use those media. The results also show the difference achievement of students’ skill in writing recount text before and after being treated by using flash pictures. It could be said that flash pictures successfully improved the students’ ability in writing recount texts. The students’ improvements were shown by the students’ interest in responding the questions and their motivation in taking part of the activities in the learning process. It meant that there was a better participation of the students in the classroom. Therefore, it indicated that flash pictures definitely developed a better students’ behaviour in writing recount texts. In line with the result, I propose that using flash pictures as media to improve student’s writing recount texts can be the one of the positive ways to increase students’ enthusiasm in learning English.
