Abstract

The title of this final project is "The Use of Diary Writing to Improve Students’ Skill in Writing Recount Texts ( classroom action research of the tenth year of SMA Ma’rif Karangawen in the academic year 2011 / 2012)". The objectives of the study are to describe how effective is diary writing to improve the students' skill in writing recount text and to know the improvement of students' skill in writing recount text after participating in teaching learning process by diary writing. I expect that the result of this study will be able to give benefit for teachers to improve methods and strategies in writing learning program. There were four steps in conducting a classroom action research: identifying problems and planning the action, acting and observing, reflecting the result of the observation, and revising of the planning. In this action research, the population was thethe tenth year of SMA Ma’rif Karangawen in the academic year 2011 / 2012. I took class X.A as the sample of this study. Writing tests were used to gather data. The tests were pre-test, test, and post-test. Besides, the questionnaire was also given to support the data. The result of this study revealed that the average of the students' result was 80.9 It was better than the average of the students' test result of pre-test that was 40 The students' achievement improved by giving them treatments. In the first cycle, the students' test result was 62.5. In the second cycle, the students' test result was 69 From the findings, I can conclude that the use of diary writing is effective to improve students' skill in writing recount text. Thus, the teacher can use diary writing as a technique to teach students in writing recount. This result hopefully would motivate the English teachers to use new technique to teach writing recount in their classroom. Hopefully, the next researchers will explore how to improve students' skill in writing recount text by diary writing more effectively in the future.
