Abstract

Writing thesis is one of academic responsibility to be accomplished by the students of Diploma IV Radiology Technics Program of Radiodiagnostic and Radiotherapy Technics Department of Jakarta II Health Polytechnics Ministry of Health in the academic year 2010/2011. In order to publish their research around the globe the students are required to do abstract translation from Indonesian into English. From the early investigation, the writer found that there are numerous errors in the abstract translations made by the students of Diploma IV Radiology Technics Program of Radiodiagnostic and Radiotherapy Technics Department of Jakarta II Health Polytechnics Ministry of Health in the academic year 2010/2011. The objectives of this final project are to identify what kind of grammatical errors found in the abstract translations, the number of the errors, and the percentage of the errors. The population of the study was the whole abstract translations made by the students of Diploma IV Radiology Technics Program of Radiodiagnostic and Radiotherapy Technics Department of Jakarta II Health Polytechnics Ministry of Health in the academic year 2010/2011. There are 112 students who are divided into four classes. The classes are Computed Tomography Scan (CT Scan), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Ultrasound (USG) and Radiotherapy. The samples are taken from the classes by using proportional random sampling technique. Each class represents 15% samples. The number of the samples are 17 abstract translations. The abstract translations are then matched to the English grammatical structure proposed by Hinkel (2005). The writer identified words, phrase or sentence which are not qualified to English grammatical structure. As the conclusions of the research, there are 149 errors. The most frequent error is form and function: adjectives and adjective phrases about 21%. The most rare error is form and function: pronouns about 1%.
