Abstract

The objectives of this study are (i) to find out the way of Communicative Activities through PPP technique is applied in teaching interpersonal conversation to the eleventh grade of SMA Ronggolawe Senior High School Semarang in the academic year 2012/2013. (ii) to find out in what ways PPP technique can improve the speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of Ronggolawe Senior High School Semarang in the academic year 2012/2013. A spoken test as the instrument is used to get the data of the study. Moreover, questionnaire is used to get the students’ interest in the use of communicative activities (PPP Technique) in the learning process. The result of the study shows that the students have an improvement in their speaking competence after they are taught through Communicative Activities using PPP technique. The students’ speaking competence is scored based on their spoken test by considering their structural accuracy, range of vocabulary, fluency, pronunciation and task achievement. Based on the data computed, before the treatment conducted (pre-test) 8.2% students have very good speaking competence, 8.6% students have good speaking competence, 38.6% students have average speaking competence, 23% students have poor speaking competence, 21.6% students have very poor speaking competence. After the treatment using PPP technique (post-test) 21.6% students have very good speaking competence, 38.6% students have good speaking competence, 23% students have average speaking competence, 8.6% students have poor speaking competence and 8.2% students have very poor speaking competence. From the data above, the writer concluded that the students in eleventh grade of Ronggolawe Senior High School Semarang have good speaking competence after they are taught through communicative activities (PPP technique).
