Abstract

This final project is about students’ ability to write review texts. The objectives of the study are to find out to what extent the communicative purpose of review text is achieved by students, to find out how the generic structure is used in the students’ review text, to find out what linguistic features characterize the students’ review text, and to describe the students’ ability to write review text. The population of this study was the twelfth grade students of State Senior High School 1 Grobogan in the academic year of 2011/2012. The total population was 357 students grouped in nine classes. Since there was no acceleration class, the writer took one class as the sample. There were 39 students of class XII IPA 6 as the sample. To collect the data, the writer used free writing test. The students wrote review texts about “Laskar Pelangi” movie in not more than 300 words. It was intended to measure the students’ ability in writing review texts. Based on the result of this study, the mean score of this study was 57. Basically, most of the students had already known the concept of review texts. They had understood its social function, generic structure, and language features. Nevertheless, they were still lack of knowledge and competence in implementing them in the written form. The students’ ability in writing review texts was influenced by the knowledge of review text (social function, generic structure, and language features), the use of present tense, and the spelling ability. From the result, it is suggested that the teacher should give more writing exercises and more explanation about the concept of review text including its social function, generic structure, and language features. The teacher also should give more attention to the students’ grammar and vocabulary since they also influence the students’ ability in writing review texts. The students are also suggested to improve their ability in writing review text, grammar, and vocabulary
