Abstract

This final project aimed at analyzing the appropriateness of reading exercises in English in Focus for grade ninth students of Junior High School with the School-Based Curriculum. I chose reading exercise on the textbook because textbook was the media that most of the teacher used in teaching. Therefore, textbook should appropriate with the curriculum. In conducting the research, I used qualitative descriptive. I took some steps in collecting the data. First, I collected the documents by identifying the reading exercises given in the textbook and those suggested by The School Based Curriculum. Second, I prepared some tables and classified the reading exercises in order to have a systematic work. At last, the interpretation of the data was compiled to show whether the reading exercises in the textbook are relevant with the School-Based Curriculum or not. The result of the study revealed there were 13 exercises belong to intonation and pronunciation, 12 exercises belong to comprehension, 19 exercises belong to vocabulary, 7 exercises belong to grammar, and 4 exercises belong to rhetorical development of text type. Furthermore, the results also showed that reading exercises in the textbook were irrelevant with the reading basic competence demanded by the School- Based Curriculum. The six reading basic competences were included in unit 1, 3, and 5. They consist of intonation, pronunciation, comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and rhetorical development of text type, whereas in unit 2 and 4, not all the reading basic competences were covered. In unit 2, there were no exercises included in grammar. In unit 4 there were no exercises included rhetorical development. Based on the results of the study, I concluded that the relevant book should cover all the reading basic competences demanded by School Based Curriculum in every unit. It would be better for teachers to use reading supplementary exercises which are relevant to the curriculum in their classroom and ask their students to have students’ work sheet (LKS) contains of good reading exercises and relevant to the curriculum. The advantages by using English E-book are the students can learn material from different source beside worksheet and explanation from their teacher; students also can have this book because it is an E-book that students can download it freely from the internet. The disadvantages is the teacher should be careful in choosing textbook because not all textbook appropriate with the curriculum.
