Abstract
In this final project, the objectives of the study were to observe how effective mini-talk show to teach spoken hortatory exposition is and to observe whether mini-talk show gives significant differences or not. To achieve the objectives of the study, an experimental quantitative research was conducted. The experiment was held through pretest - posttest experimental and control group design. The population of the study was the eleventh grade students of MA NU Banat Kudus. The total number of sample in this study was 40 students. The data were collected through speaking test. There were two groups: experimental group and control group. The control group used reading aloud in teaching spoken hortatory exposition, while the experimental group used mini-talk show for spoken hortatory exposition. The technique to analyze the data was t-test formula. It was used as a technique to determine whether there was any significant difference between the means of the score of the experimental and the control group or not. The mean score of pre-test data from experimental group was 69.20 and from the control group was 68.20. Further, the mean score of the post-test of the experimental group was 84.60, which was higher than the mean of post-test of the control group that was 71.70. The t-obtained value was (5.105). It was higher than the t-critical value on the table (1.67). It means that there is a significant difference in achievement between students who are taught spoken hortatory exposition text by Mini-Talk Show and those who are taught by reading aloud. The experimental group students’ speaking ability was improved after they had been given treatment using Mini-Talk Show. The improvement of the students in speaking a monolog hortatory exposition text is caused by using Mini-Talk Show as a technique in teaching. Learning spoken hortatory exposition text by using Mini-Talk Show technique is effective. It can encourage students to speak. Mini-Talk show makes the students have critical thinking and gets them speak freely in delivering their argument. This technique can make shy students be motivated to speak. They felt that they were more encouraged to speak after being given treatment. The teacher should be able to use various techniques of speaking skill in the hortatory exposition in order to make the students do not feel bored.
