Abstract

Speaking is one of the problems for English Foreign Language (EFL) students in Indonesia. Students are expected to be successful in learning English through mastering both language skill and language components. There are many techniques to make students more interested in speaking, one of the techniques is retelling story of a movie. Partial movie script is the media that help the students to retell the story of the movie. By using partial script movie then watching the film, students are more concern with the conversation and plot of the story. It helps the students to more confident in retelling the story. The objective of study was to find out how far the use of retelling story using partial movie script of camp rock film could improve students’ speaking ability of narrative text in MAN Brebes 1. Observation and taking action were done to achieve the objective. The research action was done for a month in Xunggulan 2 class. A checklist and field notes were used as a guideline in conducting the research action. The informal interview was done to get the students’ respons of the media. The checklist, field notes and informal interview were interpreted to get the description of using partial movie script of Camp Rock movie in retelling story to teach speaking of narrative text to the tenth graders. The writer did an action research study. The research is conducted in 2 cycle with 4 steps in every cycle. In the first cycle, the medium that is used only a movie and in the end of the cycle 1, the writer found some problems. Then in the cycle 2, the writer tried to overcome that problem. In the first step, the writer made a plan to overcome the problems. The partial movie script is chose to be a new medium in teaching speaking of narrative text. Then the writer applied the medium in class. While doing the action, the writer also did an observation. In the last step, the writer asked the students to retell the story. In evaluating the students, the writer had four criteria; pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and fluency. Based on the result and the respons of the media, the partial movie script as a new media in teaching speaking in MAN Brebes 1 is proved to overcome the problems in speaking class and also improve the students’ speaking ability.
