Abstract

Writing is a difficult skill to be mastered by the tenth graders of senior high school since there are many problems which are faced by the students when they are asked to compose a text. To overcome the problems, teachers need to facilitate the students by using an interesting medium. Therefore, I conducted the research on the application of Edraw Mind Map to enhance the tenth graders of senior high school’s mastery in writing a narrative text. The subjects of the research were the tenth graders of class X-1 of the Pioneering of International Standardized Senior High School 2 Pati in the academic year of 2011/2012. While, the objectives of the research were to find out: the problems faced by tenth graders in writing a narrative text; how Edraw Mind Map can be implemented to enthuse the students in writing of narrative text; and how Edraw Mind Map can improve the students’ mastery in writing of narrative text. This study was an action research which consisted of two cycles. In each cycle, I observed the students’ behaviour. To collect the data of the students’ behaviour, I used observation sheet. I also gave pre-cycle and post-cycle test as the supporting data whether there was improvement of the students’ mastery in writing a narrative text. In addition, I gave the instrument of questionnaire to the students in the last meeting. Based on the observation result, I found that there was improvement of the students’ behaviour from the first cycle up to the second cycle. The students seemed more enthusiastic and interested in teaching and learning processes. The results of pre-cycle test (62.87) and post-cycle test (71.66) also showed that the students’ writing ability was improved. Moreover, it was supported by the questionnaire result that using Edraw Mind Map was interesting and helpful. The conclusions drawn from the study are the students face some problems in writing a narration. The problems are the students feel difficult to find an idea and develop it into a good composition, and the students’ mastery of past tense is low especially in the past form of the irregular verbs. The study shows that Edraw Mind Map is effective to enhance the students’ mastery and enthusiasm in writing a narrative text. Thus, it is suggested that teachers can use Edraw Mind Map as alternative media for teaching narrative. For students, Edraw Mind Map can stimulate their creativity. Furthermore, it is expected for the next researchers to find another media which can be used to enhance students’ writing ability.
