Abstract
This study described the comparison between students' self-translations and the online translations, in this case Google translation and sederet.com translation. The method used by the researcher was the descriptive comparative analysis to describe the accuracy of the students’ translation, Google translation, sederet.com translation and their comparisons. This study used descriptive comparative approach, and the instruments used were test, questionnaire, and interview. The result of the study proved that the accuracy level of students’ translation is 78.08%, while the accuracy of the translation from Google translation is 24.61%, and the accuracy level of sederet.com translation is 32.00%. To analyse the data, logical thinking and simple average were used. Analysis of the questionnaire showed that 22.22% of students never translated before, 44.44% students translated more than once, and 55.55% of students translated more than three times. In terms of the tools (dictionary) used by students, 22.22% of the students used monolingual dictionary, 44.44% of the students used mono-lingual dictionary and bilingual dictionary, and 33.33% of the students used other dictionaries. In terms of motivation in doing translation, 50.00% of students had good motivation, 38.39% students had fair motivation, and 1.11% of the students had low motivation. In terms of students’ perception of the difficulty of the translation, 16.67% of students perceived them as difficult, 72.22% of students perceived them as quite difficult, and 1:11% of students perceived them as easy. In terms of students’ perceptions of their fluency in translating, 27.78% students were fluent, 50.00% students were quite fluent, and 22.22% students were not fluent. From the interview, the students’ perceptions of their translation were as follow, 66.67% students perceived it as difficult, 33.33% students perceived it as a challenging activity. The interview data showed that all respondents had experienced translating using an online dictionary, but 5 of 7 respondents stated that they preferred to translate it manually rather than by using online translation because there were some misunderstandings of meaning. From the data above it can be concluded that the fifth semester students’ self-translation is better than the result of the online translation; in this case are Google translation and sederet.com.
