Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the effectiveness of using PROBEX strategy (Predict, Observe and Explain) to increase the students’ critical and creative thinking. This research implemented control group pre-test post-test design. The population of the research is the students of VIIIth grade of SMP Negeri 1 Karangtengah academic year 2011/2012. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, and with VIII B as the experimental class and VIII C as the control class. The data collection was by documentation, test, and observation sheet. The effective indicator in this research was inspected from : 1) average post-test grade of critical and creative thinking skills, 2) improvement in critical and creative thinking skill, 3) learning completeness. Statistical test used were: 1) T-test of right part used to find out the post-test average of the students’ critical and creative thinking skills, 2) Gain test to find out the rate of improvement of the students’ critical and creative thinking skills which occurred in both experimental and control classes, 3) Significance test to find out whether there are significant improvement between experimental class and control class, 4) Learning completeness test to find out whether the research sample have fulfilled the learning requirement, this learning completeness test was compared to the KKM (Minimum Completeness Criteria) of Natural Science subject in SMP N 1 Karangtengah of 70. The research resulted in: 1) The average of post-test grade of the students’ critical and creative thinking skills in the experimental class was better than the control class, for experimental class was 75,71 and for control class was 59,24, 2) which indicated that the improvement of the students’ critical and creative thinking skills in the experimental class was better than in the control class, control class acquired improvement of 0,134 which included in a lower category and experimental of 0,524 which included in middle category, 3) experimental class had fulfileld the learning completeness while control class had not. According to the research result, thus it can be concluded that the the PROBEX learning strategy was effective to increase the critical and creative thinking skills for students at SMP N 1 Karangtengah on pressure subject of natural science learning.
