Abstract

Nowadays, the existence of gay was getting more found in our surrounding. The existence of gay in our surrounding created controversy. Thus, the writer was interested in finding and analyzing more information about gay. The objective of this study was to describe the people who determine to be a gay in James Baldwin’s novel Giovanni’s Room. There are (1) what reason makes people decide to be a homosexual or gay found in James Baldwin’s Novel Giovanni’s Room (2) how James Baldwin’s Novel Giovanni’s Room looks at the existence of homosexual and gay and (3) what questions (critiques) toward homosexual and gay are revealed toward James Baldwin’s Novel Giovanni’s Room. The aim of this study was to build an awareness upon the readers about gay’s phenomena. In order to achieve these objectives of the study, the writer used descriptive qualitative research method in which the data were in the form of written words and they were analyzed descriptively. There were several steps in analyzing the gay’s determination in this novel. Firstly, the writer read the novel several times to understand the whole story. Secondly, the writer listed the data which are related to the topic from the novel based on their meaning and then categorized them according to the objectives of the study. The next step, the writer interpreted the data according to the theory related to the topic in order to clarify and analyze the meaning. Finally, the writer presented the conclusion and suggestion. This study emphasized on three main objectives. The first was to find out the reasons of gay’s determination, those were: lack of parents’ affection, lack of finance, hatred of woman, and influence of environment. The second was to discover the views of novel toward gay and homosexual. The last was to elicit the critiques, there were: gay is a kind of virus, gay is a crime, gay causes someone far from himself and yet gay’s supporter is superior. Finally, this study was expected to give additional knowledge to the readers about phenomena of gay and homosexuality and the critiques toward it that might be useful as an additional reference. It was also expected to give awareness to the readers to be more critical in reading literary works. Moreover, this study was also expected to give example on how a reader should act and even deconstruct literary works.
