Abstract

The world’s descriminating view on women is always reflected in inferiority while superiority is always identical with men. This final project is aimed to describe the women character’s personalities and gender issues existing in A Doll’s House. The object of the study is Ibsen’s play A Doll’s House. The data of the study are in the term of words and sentences in dialogue and also events along the story. The data of this study are collected by doing the following steps: reading the play script for several times, identifying the data related to gender issues, inventorying and underlining the data, classifying the data, selecting the data and finally reporting the data. In analyzing the data, the writer did some steps including exposing, explaining, interpreting the data and the last is concluding. The interpretation and the explanation are done from the point of view of feminism approach. Based on the analysis, the writer can conclude that there are five concepts of gender issues, focuses in gender inequalities. They are gender and marginalization, gender and subordination, gender and stereotype, gender and violence, and the last gender and burden. The result of the analysis of A Doll’s House is that there was social convention in which more power and prestige were awarded to men and women. It had coffered greater authority on men than on women. The images were created gender issues at that time, mostly in the marriage relationship. Men were regarded as more powerful and they had more authority in the family than women. The condition placed women in position of victims so that it created male-dominant and female-subordinate situations.
