Abstract

Street children as a problem of a society especially in the city have become a serious problem from the 19th century until now. Children who do not have their rights as a child in general are a fact that we have to face. Regarding this conception, the main focus of this study is to point out the problems and causes of street children as an impact of Industrial Revolution in the novel entitled Oliver Twist written by Charles Dickens. In this study the writer uses a descriptive-qualitative method. This method is used because the data were in the form of written words and they were descriptively analysed. The analysis involved interpretational qualitative data, interpreted and reported descriptively. In conducting the analysis, the writer used several steps. Firstly, the writer read the novel several times carefully and thoroughly. Secondly, the writer identified as well as classifies the data that found in the novel. Finally, the writer analysed the selected data one by one and reported the findings in order to find out the relevant data implied in the object of the study. Based on the intertextuality study, the writer found that there were some problems dealing with street children that similar with Oliver Twist’ life. Those were child labour, child trafficking as well as its problems. The writer also found some causes of street children problems. Some of them included family breakdown, poverty, exploitation by adults, the impact of Industrialisation, urbanisation and overcrowding as a result of Industrialisation, and corruption. By studying and analysing Oliver Twist, the writer hoped that the findings of this study can be used as a reference for those who are interested in analysing a novel, especially a novel about children and their problems, and also can enrich our knowledge about the relationship between literature and reality. Besides, this study can stimulate a further research related to the relationship between literature and reality in other aspects of life especially about children.
