Abstract

This final project is entitled: The Use of Elevator Pitch in Teaching Speaking with Entrepreneurship Characters to Year X of SMK Muhammadiyah Cawas. An Action Research in the grade X of SMK Muhammadiyah Cawas in the Academic Year of 2011/2012. The reason why I chose the Elevator Pitch technique was based on the pre observation weaknesses in teaching learning process. The pre observation showed that English rarely used by the students during the learning process. As the result, they had difficulty in speaking English. Beside the difficulty in speaking English, the students’ entrepreneurial characters were low. Through these reasons, I find a solution to use Elevator Pitch technique to improve students’ speaking skill and students’ entrepreneurial characters. The aim of this study is to explain and describe how to use Elevator pitch in teaching speaking and improving students’ entrepreneurial characters. This study also aims at finding out the students’ improvement after the treatments using Elevator Pitch technique in teaching speaking to the year X of SMK Muhammadiyah Cawas. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, I designed an action research that consist of pre-observation and two cycles of treatment. The population of this study was grade X of SMK Muhammadiyah Cawas. The number of participants was 40 students. There were six meetings in this research. The first meeting was for pre-observation, the second until the fifth meeting were for treatments using Elevator Pitch technique and the sixth meeting was for post treatment test. In this study, the pre-observation weaknesses were used as the basic problems in conducting the first cycle. During the cycle 1, I also observed the weaknesses of cycle 1 in teaching and learning process. Then, the result of the observation in cycle 1 was used as the basic problems in conducting cycle 2. Before conducting cycle 2, I repaired the previous method by considering the problems in cycle 1. After the second cycle, there were no serious problems in teaching and learning process. So, I do not need to conduct the third cycle. The result of the research after the treatments shows that the students’ speaking skill and their entrepreneurial characters such as creativity and innovation, optimism, self-confidence, leadership, performance and expression and team work were improved. Based on the result above, it is found that the use of Elevator Pitch in teaching speaking and improving the students’ entrepreneurial characters is very effective. This research suggests the teacher to use Elevator Pitch as a technique to improve the students’ speaking skill and their entrepreneurial characters.
