Abstract

This study describes the writing exercises in the English Textbook of “Let’s Talk 1” for Junior High School Students Year VII published by Pakar Raya. In conducting the research, I used a descriptive approach and documentation method since the purpose of the study is to describe the compatibility of the writing exercises in the text book with the School-Based Curriculum 2006 in terms of clear direction, the existence of model, and types of writing. In analyzing the data, I took some steps. First, I took the copy of the textbook. Second, I analyzed the data by choosing all kinds of writing exercises in the textbook based on School-Based Curriculum 2006. Third, I categorized them in the tables in terms of its compatibility with the School-Based Curriculum 2006, clear direction, the existence of models, and types of writing. At last, I gave the interpretation of the compatibility between the writing exercises and the School-Based Curriculum 2006 in terms of clear direction, the existence of models, and types of writing. The result of the analysis showed that four writing skills demanded by the School-Based Curriculum are included in the text book. There are 91.15% of writing exercises which are compatible with the School-Based Curriculum. 98.06% of them have clear directions, 49.51% of them have models, and 86.41% of them are guided writing. Based on the result of study, I conclude that there is a compatibility between the writing exercises in the the textbook and the writing skill demanded by the curriculum in terms of clear direction, the existence of model, and whether they are guided or free writing.
