Abstract
This study attempted to compare the effectiveness of learning vocabulary through descriptive text and through crossword puzzle. The main purpose of the study was to know which one was more effective in learning vocabulary through descriptive text and through crossword puzzle. The study used an experimental design. The subjects of the study were 68 students of fifth grade students of SDN 1 and 2 Karaban, Pati in the academic year 2011/2012. The students of the experimental group (33 students) were treated by using crossword puzzles, whereas the control group (35 students) was treated by using descriptive texts. The technique used for collecting data was pre-test, treatments, and post-test. The form of pre-test and post-test was the same; they were multiple-choice items. In analyzing the data, I used t-test formula. In detail, the mean score of pre-test in experiment group was 57.97, while the control group was 59.56. Then, the mean score of post-test in experimental group was 84.72 and the control group was 79.55. The result of the t-test formula based on the pre-test data was -0.755, while the t-test value based on the post-test data was 2.142, and the critical value was 2.032. At last, the t-test value of post-test was higher than critical value. It meant that the students got better understanding when they were taught using crossword puzzles than when they were taught using descriptive texts. In conclusion, using crossword puzzle was more effective than using descriptive text in learning vocabulary. According to the result above, teachers should take into account the use of crossword puzzle in their teaching-learning process. Crossword puzzle can be alternative way to learn vocabulary since it can create relaxed situation and enjoyable learning experience.
