Abstract
Writing is one of way how people to communicate each other. But, for tenth grade students of SMA 1 Karanganyar Demak, it is difficult for them to write, especially in writing news item text. To overcome the problem, sequential pictures are implemented in the class. This final project is an action research to answer the question of how the sequential picture is implemented in teaching written news item text. The answer was proven through the research. In the research, the subject of the study was X-1class of SMA N 1 Karanganyar, Demak in the academic year 2011/2012. This study uses descriptive-qualitative method in analyzing the data. This research was delivered in two cycles; they are cycle 1 and 2. During the activities, the researcher observed the students’ interests, responses, and improvement through pre and post-questionnaire, observation notes, and test (pre, cycle 1, and cycle 2 test). From the field notes, it could be concluded that sequential pictures were implemented well for teaching writing news item text in the X-1 class. It was strengthened by the questionnaire distributed to the students. The result showed that most of the students were interested in learning writing news item text using sequential pictures. The media helped them to develop their ideas. Three tests given to the students also showed their improvement. The mean of the pre-test was 55.89. After getting some treatments using sequential pictures in cycle 1, the average score of the students in writing in news item text was 68.11. It increased 12.22 points. From the findings, the plan was revised and then cycle 2 was delivered. After that, the post-test was conducted to know the students’ improvement. The data analysis showed that the mean of the post-test was 77.37. It increased 9.26 points from cycle 1 test. The result of the students’ tests showed that the students mastery was improved 21.48 from the pre-test (55.89) to the cycle 2 test (77.37). From the result, it can bee seen that sequential pictures gave significance improvement in teaching news item text for tenth grade students. The conclusion taken from the research is that the sequential pictures were implemented well and suitable for teaching writing news item text for tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Karanganyar Demak. The media were also could improve the students’ mastery in writing news item text.
