Abstract

This final project is based on a study which attempts to examine the way to develop a Java Micro Edition 2 (J2ME) based reading material for eighth grade of junior high school students. The main purpose of this study was to describe the reasons why students have low reading enthusiasm, describe the way of developing a J2ME based reading material for eighth grade of junior high school students, and how students’ response the material. The reasons why students have low reading enthusiasm have been discovered by gathering existing data from previous study trough literature study. The development of the reading material has been done by using research and development method which included eight steps. While the students’ response to the J2ME reading media was taken with questionnaire. Result showed that students’ low reading enthusiasm is due to parents’ lack of encouragement, the lack of reading facilities and materials, social influence, and the students’ lack of spare time. The reading material development was done by doing the eight steps, i.e. determining potential and problem, collecting data, designing the product, validating the design, revising the design, testing the product, revising the product, and mass producing the product. The first two steps were done by literature study. The next three steps were done by the writer with the help of final project adviser. Testing the product was done by trying out the product to fourteen students with different mobile phones. 90,5% at the average students gave good response toward this reading material. After getting the feedback from the tryout, the writer revised the design and mass produced the product.
