Abstract

Piloting International Level School (RSBI) program is a school program for introducing a non–native language and culture to majority language students with the aim of providing students with language skills in the foreign language. This final project is conducted to find out the physics teachers’ major difficulties in dealing with their teaching using English as a medium of instruction in bilingual classes of Piloting International Level School (RSBI) program. In this study, the researcher used descriptive and qualitative method. This research was conducted in SMAN 1 Rembang. The respondents of this research were the year eleventh physics teachers. In this research, the researcher conducted observation and interview to the observed teachers to gather the data. It was revealed that the physics teachers of SMAN 1 Rembang still had problems in teaching the subject using English as a medium of instruction in Piloting International Level School (RSBI) classes such as their ability in making the syllabus and lesson plan. Besides, the teachers had difficulties in dealing with the books and materials’ choice for their students. In addition, there were some physical terminologies they could not pronounce well. They sometimes made errors in using grammar and had misconception in delivering physical terminologies. Referring to the data, the writer would like to offer some suggestions for the Indonesian government and for the teachers. First, the government should give more attention to the implementation of the RSBI program by held the RSBI program trainings continually as the way to socialize this new program to the teachers. Second, the government should provide facilities and supplementary books for the teachers and the students, which are appropriate with the curriculum for Piloting International Level School (RSBI) program. Third, the teachers also should increase their English ability in order to deliver the subject using English well and give understandable explanation to the students. Fourth, the teachers should read the books related to the curriculum for RSBI class and join more training related to the program. And the last one, the teachers should be more creative and innovative in using the appropriate methods and teaching aids.
