Abstract

This study was about the relationship between non-verbal communication conveyance through the use of gestures in the drama “Roro Jonggrang – The Paradox of Lifetime” Performance and the students speaking performance development since this kind of communication uses the power of body languages to support the verbal or spoken language. The objectives of this study are to describe the condition of the students’ gestures in speaking before they take drama course, the gestures the students learned in drama, and to find out whether or not there is any impacts of the use of gestures in every drama rehearsal and drama performance on the students’ speaking performance improvement. The research design of this study was qualitative research. As the sources of data, the writer did the field observation during the drama rehearsals and recorded the results into the observation sheets. Besides, the writer also did two interviews to some students. The last but not least, to support those data, the writer used the questionnaire in conducting the results of the study. This study results in some good impacts that could improve the students’ speaking performance after learning and applying many types of gestures as a form of nonverbal communication in the “Roro Jonggrang – The Paradox of Lifetime” drama performance. The impacts were the improvement of the students’ self-confidence, their ability in drawing any idea through non-verbal communication, their proficiency in harmonizing their body language or gestures with their verbal language, and also their respond in receiving and interpreting any ideas.
