Abstract

M.A. Keywords: “Man’s Understatement” War is a phenomenon which occurs between political communities, defined as those entities which either are states or intend to become states. War is a brutal and ugly enterprise. Yet it remains central to human history and social change. The object of the study is a short story entitled Tunnels of Death. This study focuses on the Man’s understatement in war as a cause of the war cruelty. In this research, the writer would like to achieve four objectives of the study. The first objective is that the writer wants to find out the man’s understatement in war in the story. Secondly, the writer wants to find out the man’s understatement in war in the story based on Historical background. Third, the writer would like to find out the forms of understatement in war in the story. The last objective is the writer would like to describe the factor of understatement according to the story. The writer used a descriptive qualitative research as a method of her study. There were several steps in analyzing Man’s Understatement in War in Tunnels of Death. The first step was reading the short story in order to understand the story. Secondly, the writer separated the data and non data by marking, underlining, and bracketing of the data or usually called identifying. Third steps, the writer listed all the identified data and put them in tables or inventorying. The final step, the writer analyzed the data and explained the Man’s Understatement in War through the theory presented by expert. Based on the data analysis, the forms of understatement in the story were the understatement toward humanity, understatement toward rules, and the understatement toward religion. Within the story, the writer also found the factors of understatement. The first factor of the man’s understatement was the ideological rivalry and the second factor of man’s understatement was due to the necessity to defend their own group. Based on the result of the study, the writer concluded that the factors are present in the story of Tunnels of Death are cruelty and an inhuman action. It is suggested that peoples who love peace should read this book in order to know the bad thing from the war which exposed in the Tunnels of Death.
