Abstract

Ali, Fachri. 2012. Using a Group Investigation Technique to Improve the Students’ Skill of Writing a Report Text (An Action Research to the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA N 1 Demak in the Academic Year of 2011/2012). A Final Project, English Department, Faculty of Languages and Arts, Semarang State University. First Advisor: Dr. Januarius Mujianto, M.Hum., Second Advisor: Dra. Sri Suprapti, M.Pd. Key words: group investigation technique, writing, students’ skill, report text, students’ participation This final project is about using Group Investigation technique to improve the students’ skill of writing a report text to the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Demak. The objective of the study was to find out whether the Group Investigation technique can improve the students’ skill of writing a report text or not. It is expected that this study would be useful for students, English teachers, and further researchers in the language teaching and learning process. The subject of the study was the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Demak in the academic year of 2011/2012. Class XI 1 of Exact Science Program was chosen as the subject of the study. There were 38 students in that class. The techniques used for collecting the data were an observation sheet as the main evidence of this study and a pre-test, cycle I test, post-test, pre-questionnaire, and post-questionnaire as the supporting evidence. First, I gave the pre-test and pre-questionnaire. It was conducted at the beginning of the research. Next, I did the cycle I which ended by the cycle I test. Third, I continued to the cycle II ended by the post-test. In the end of the cycle II, I also distributed the post-questionnaire to find out the students’ perception of using the Group Investigation technique in writing a report text. Additionally, the English teacher of that class helped me observe the students’ behavioral changes from the first to the last activity. The results of this study revealed that the students’ behavioral changes improved well. They became more active after giving some treatments to them. And then, the improvement of the students’ scores in writing a report text was good. From the data calculation, it was obtained that the mean of the pre-test was 64.82, the mean of the cycle I test was 69.95, and the mean of the post-test was 76.97. It increased 12.15 from the pre-test to the post-test. Based on the research results, it can be stated that the Group Investigation technique gives contribution to improve the students’ skill of writing a report text. It answered the research question of this study that was “can Group Investigation technique improve the students skill of writing a report text to the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Demak in the academic year of 2011/2012?” Based on the study, I found out that using the Group Investigation technique to teach writing a report text was helpful for the students. Therefore, it is suggested that this technique can be used by English teachers as an alternative technique to teach writing a report text.
