Keywords: writing, collaborative learning, descriptive text The study is about the effectiveness of collaborative learning in the teaching of descriptive text writing. And the objective of the study is to find out if there is significant difference in the result of the students’ achievement between the students who are taught using Collaborative learning compared to those who are taught using conventional method. The design that I used in this research was true experimental research using pre-test post-test control group design. The population of the study was the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Ngawen Blora. The number of the subject of the research was 46 students, 23 students of 8C were chosen as the experimental group, whereas the control group was the students of 8B which consisted of 23 students. Before conducting the experiment, the test should be tried out first to get the validity and reliability of the test instrument. Then, the research was begun by giving a pre test, treatment, and a post test to both groups above. The result of the test was analyzed by using t-test formula. The result of this research showed that the mean score of pre test data from experimental group was 55.13 and from the control group was 57.40. At the end of the experiment, the post test was conducted, and the result of the post test was better than the pretest. The mean score of the experimental group was 72.17, while the mean score of the control group was 64.35. It means that using Collaborative Learning in teaching writing gives a better result than without using it. The t-value obtained was also higher than the critical value. It means that Collaborative Learning is effective and can be used to improve students’ mastery of writing.
