Abstract

Burhanudin. 2012. The textless comic, themed picture, writing, dialog, experimental study Final Project. English Department. Faculty of Languages and Arts. Semarang State University. First advisor: Prof. Dr. Dwi Rukmini, Second Advisor: Dr. Dwi Anggani L.B., M.Pd. Key words: language chunks, speaking, transactional spoken text, action research, and junior high school students This research concerns with the use of language chunks in teaching transactional spoken text to improve students' speaking skill. The objectives of the study are to find out how well using language chunks in teaching transactional spoken text in improving students' speaking skill, to find out how effective the use of language chunks in teaching transactional spoken text in improving students' speaking skill is, and to find out how the results of observation, tests, and questionnaire support each other. To conduct the study, I adopted an action research design. I took the eighth graders of SMP N 1 Pecalungan as the subject of the study. There were two cycles in this study. Each cycle consists of 3 meetings. I gave an assessment test to know their progress in speaking. To analyze the results of the tests, I used the scoring guidance suggested by Brown (2004). The behavioral changes that I observed include five points such as students’ action in asking question to the teacher; students’ action in answering the teacher’s question; students’ ability in doing assignment from the teacher; students’ attention during the lesson; and students’ activity in looking up a dictionary. The results of this study revealed that the students’ behavioral changes were improved. They became more active after I gave some treatments to them. Based on the results of the students’ behavioral changes, that can be seen if the students’ behavior were increased and they made improvement after they have been taught by using language chunks in teaching transactional spoken text in improving students' speaking skill. The results of questionnaire showed that the students gave positive perception to the use of language chunks. According to the results above, it can be concluded that the language chunks give contribution to the improvement of the students’ speaking skill and to the improvement of the students’ behavioral changes. The use of the language chunks is recommended for the English teacher as an alternative way.
