Abstract

Zuhara, Trieke Agrahtika. 2012. The Teaching of Writing a Dialog Trough Textless Comic and Themed Picture. A Final Project, English Department, Faculty of Languages and Arts, Semarang State University. Advisor I: Drs. Amir Sisbiyanto, M.Hum and II: Dr. Dwi Anggani Linggar B. M. Pd Key words: textless comic, themed picture, writing, dialog, experimental study. This final project is an experimental study that answers the three research questions: (1) Which is more effective between textless comic and themed picture as media to improve the ability of the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Randudongkal, Pemalang in the academic year of 2010/2011 in writing dialog? (2) Is there any significant difference between teaching writing dialog using textless comic and themed picture at the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Randudongkal, Pemalang in the academic year of 2010/2011? The population of this study was the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Randudongkal, Pemalang. The numbers of the subject was 58 students. There were five meetings in the research. One meeting was for the Pre Test. Three meetings were for the treatments and one meeting for the Post Test. Before the treatment was conducted, a Pre Test was given for the experimental group. The activity of the Pre Test was the students were asked to write a dialog. A Post Test was given after the treatment was done. The activity of the Post Test for the first experimental group was that the students were asked to write a dialog through textless comic. For the second experimental group, the activity of Post Test was that the students were asked to write a dialog through themed picture. In the Pre Test, the average score of the first experimental group was 62.75 and the second experimental group was 61.79. The result of Post Test of the first experimental group was 82.89 and the second experimental group was 77.93. The result of t-value of mean difference test was 2.98 and t-table was 1.67. Which means that t-value is higher than t-table (2.98 >1.67). Based on that calculation, there is significant improvement between the result of Pre Test and Post Test. This research shows that is textless comic is more significant than themed picture in teaching writing dialog because of the following aspect: (a) Textless comic is more useful, because it can make the students explore their imagination, so it will help them arrange the dialog. (b) With six pictures in textless comic, it helps the students to give the clues and it is more enthusiastic and fun in learning writing dialog. It is suggested that the teachers should be more creative in giving the media, such as texless comic and themed picture. For the example giving stories from other countries or culture that have the moral values.
