Arif, Syaiful. 2012. Fostering the Eight Grade Junior High School Students’ Mastery of Past Tense in Recount Text Through Numbered-Heads Together. Final Project. English Department. Languages and Arts Faculty. Semarang State University. First Advisor: Puji Astuti, S. Pd., M. Pd., and Second Advisor: Drs. Suprapto, M. Hum. Keywords: Grammar, Eight Grade, Past Tense, Recount Text, Numbered Head Together. Grammar is an important aspect in creating communication in English. However, teaching grammar in Indonesia becomes complicated since students always think about a set of word forms and rules of usage. This condition causes grammar one of the avoided subjects in teaching English. A better approach in teaching grammar is needed to create pleasant condition in class. This final project presents the use of Numbered-Heads Together (NHT) as an alternative method in teaching grammar. This is an action research on the eight grade Junior High School of MTs Nahdlotusshibyan, Wonoketingal, Karanganyar, Demak. The VIII C class which consist of 10 males and 30 females students was chosen as a sample in this research. They were taught about using past tense to write recount text through a cooperative learning instructional strategy namely Numbered-Heads Together. This final project is held to answer two questions: (1) How Can NHT structure facilitate the teacher in teaching grammar to support past tense in recount text; and (2) How well is NHT improving students’ mastery in using past tense in writing recount text. Research data were collected through quantitative and qualitative analysis. In qualitative analysis, the data was gathered through some ways, they are preliminary study, class observation, interview, and questionnaire. Preliminary study was conducted before giving some treatments in order to find the main problems and characteristic of the subject in this research. Class observation, interview and questionnaire were done during the treatments held. While in quantitative analysis, this research takes the data through the mean calculation of writing test. The writing test was given two times in the beginning as a pre-test and in the last as a post-test. The mean score of those tests were compared in order to know the increase of students’ score. In the pre-test, the mean score is 43, 8. This score is still low and under the Criteria of Learning Mastery. After the treatments, a different test result was obtained. The post-test mean score is 65,95. Although the increase was not too significant, it can be said that NHT was effective in raising students’ mastery of past tense. The conclusion drawn from the research is that NHT can increase students’ mastery of past tense in writing recount text. Teacher can use NHT as a technique in teaching not only recount text, but also, the other genres and language components.
