Abstract
ABSTRACT Hidayati, Puspita. 2010. Holocaust in Schindler’s List Movie Reduces Anti-Semitism. Final Project, English Department, Faculty of Language and Art. Semarang State University. First Advisor: Maria Johana, S.S., M.Si. Second Advisor: Galuh Kirana, S.S., M.Pd. Key Words: Holocaust, anti-Semitism This final project was about holocaust in a movie entitled Schindler’s List and anti-Semitism. The aims of the study were to prove that holocaust was really exposed in Schindler’s List and to prove that holocaust reduced anti-Semitism. This research was a descriptive qualitative because the data in this research were in the form of scenes and dialogues which are taken from video movie and movie script. The data were collected by watching the video movie and reading the movie script, identifying, inventorying, classifying, and selecting the data taken from video movie and movie script. The data in this final project were analyzed using historicism approach because this final project analyzes a phenomenon that lasted in the past. The use of new historicism approach was to support the data supporting the topic. According to Bressler, new historicism was called “cultural poetics in America and cultural materialism in Great Britain” (1999:238). It declared that all history was subjective, written by people whose personal biases affect their interpretation of the past. History, asserts cultural poetics, could never provide a totally accurate picture of past events or the world view of group of people. From the data analysis, I found that holocaust was really exposed in Schindler’s List. I also found that holocaust in Schindler’s List could reduce anti-Semitism. Many surveys showed the decline number of anti-Semitism after 1993, the year when the movie was released. Anti-Semitism in form of negative stereotype concerning Jewish declined about 4% in West Germany and 1 % in East Germany from 1990 to 1994. The number of anti-Semitism incidents in USA from 1994 to 1997 decreased 495 incidents. The incidents continued to decline until 1997. The decline percentage from 1996 to 1997 was 8.8%. By studying and analyzing holocaust and anti-Semitism, I believed that my findings could be hopefully used as a reference for those who were interested in analyzing holocaust and anti-Semitism. The findings also could be hopefully used to enhance our knowledge about Hitler and Nazi.
