Abstract

ABSTRACT Nur, Mona Anisa A. 2010. The Translation of Referential Meaning of Words in Private Jokes Found in High School Musical 2 Movie. Final Project. English Department. Keywords: translation, referential meaning, private jokes This final project is an analysis of the translation of referential meaning of words in private jokes as an optional utterance found in High School Musical 2 movie. The objectives of the study are to analyze the translation of private jokes containing type of referential meaning found in the movie and explain the existence of referential meaning in subtitling of the movie. So, a descriptive qualitative method is used in this study. The data were collected from the English subtitle ‘High School Musical 2’ wrote by Kate Morrison and Indonesian subtitle translated by TheHack3r. The discussion was focused on the both of English and Indonesian dialog of private joke that contain referential meaning in the movie. From the analysis, it was found out that each reference was discovered inconstantly. Some of them were used more frequently and others were less. On the other hand, the referential meaning does not make the private joke funnier when translated in Indonesia. It just exists in the dialog. The result of this research shows that there are 76 sentences in referential meaning. They are divided into three kinds. Those are 46 personal references, 24 demonstrative references, and 6 comparative references. Including personal references, there are seven utterances containing personal reference ‘I’. Meanwhile there are four utterances for personal reference ‘you’, there are 2 utterances for personal reference ‘he’, 1 utterance for personal reference ‘she’, four utterances for personal reference ‘we’, 2 utterances for personal references ‘they’, 19 utterances for personal references ‘it’, 4 utterances for personal references ‘your’, 1 utterance for personal reference ‘our’, 1 utterance for personal reference ‘our’, and 1 utterance for personal reference ‘yours’. The second reference is demonstrative reference, there are adverbial and nominal. The adverbial demonstrative reference, I found 5 utterances for demonstrative references ‘there’, and the nominal demonstrative references are 19 utterances. Still referential meaning, there is comparative reference which organized into three; first is identical, which is only 1 utterance, the second is 1 utterances for comparative reference ‘similarity’, and numerate is 4 utterances. It is suggested that a translator must keep the wholeness of the text; also he or she must possess enough competence and be aware especially to catch the various types of meaning in the text. If student wants to make the translation of joke funnier to target language, he must deeply learn to pragmatics in understanding language as culture. People who have different cultures with others will not laugh at the same jokes.
