Abstract

Barongan, is a type of performing arts that lives and develops in several regions of Java. Barongan Kusumojoyo, as one of the barongan arts that lives and develops in the coastal areas of Lor-Wetan Java, carries out various creativities to maintain its existence. The objectives of this study were to: (1) describe a picture of the life of the people of Gebang Village, Bonang District; (2) describe the form of the barongan performance Kusumojoyo in Demak Regency; (3) describe art education in the art of Barongan Kusumojoyo, Demak Regency; (4) describe the creativity of Barongan Kusumojoyo in Demak Regency in the context of art education. This research uses a qualitative approach, data collection is done by observation, interview and documentation methods. The validity of the data was carried out through the methods (1) extension of participation, (2) persistence of observations, (3) triangulation, and (4) peer examination through discussion. Data analysis techniques were carried out by reducing data, presenting data, then drawing conclusions. Based on the research results, it was found that the barongan art of Kusumojoyo in Demak Regency is a barongan art group that still exists in society and has become a symbol of community prestige or prestige. The existence of such barongan Kusumojoyo cannot be separated from the creativity carried out by the art group. The creativity carried out by the Barongan Kusumojoyo art group are: (1) using dance before the main performance; (2) collaborating with musicians from other groups; (2) using multiple members and multiple properties; (3) using popular songs as accompaniment music; (4) wearing a festive costume; (6) create new stories on demand; (7) collaborating with third parties, and (8) using social media consistently. Art education is education through art which is also learning to form creative (progressive) capacities, and education in art which forms cultural awareness (conservative) The suggestion that can be given from this research is that all members of the barongan art group Kusumojoyo can still maintain their creativity and continue to improve their quality. Barongan Kusumojoyo art can be a medium for learning in formal schools. The local community is expected to continue to support the existence of their traditional arts. The local government is expected to give positive attention and contribution to traditional arts in society.
