Abstract

Movies and series are a crucial part in our lives. There are so many that can be watched in the cinema or through various streaming services. One of those series is a situation comedy called Mr. Iglesias. The series shows the dynamic between teachers and students who are mostly from a low socio-economic background. Because it is a situation comedy, the use of humor is often used. It is certainly not easy for Indonesian speakers to understand the humors, which are in English. This is the reason why subtitling is a crucial part of today’s life e.i., it helps people understand what is being said in foreign languages. Humor is an indispensable part of human’s life. Even so, it is infamous for being hard to explain and being hard to translate. Ergo, this study tries to study the humor types and the subtitling strategies used in Mr. Iglesias. This is qualitative descriptive research. To collect the data, the researcher used the transcript of subtitle, then it was tabulated into a table to make the analysis easier. After all the data were analyzed, they were transcribed, read, categorized, analyzed, interpreted, and concluded. The result showed that all of humor types were present in Mr. Iglesias. Of the 76 humors found, 42 (55%) of them are Universal Humor, 21 (28%) of them are Cultural Humor, and 13 (17%) of them are Linguistic Humor. Furthermore, there were 9 subtitling strategies used; they were: Expansion, Paraphrase, Transfer, Imitation, Transcription, Condensation, Decimation, Deletion, and Resignation Strategies.
