Abstract

The right speed reading technique is needed to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of time in reading biographical texts, which tend to be long and also contain words, structures, and characteristics that are difficult to understand. Skimming and Scanning techniques are given to improve students' reading interest and reading skills at SMA N 1 Kendal. This study used a quasi-experimental design. The sample used by the researcher was purposive sampling by taking 72 students from two classes, namely the MIPA 4 tenth class as an experimental class taught by skimming and scanning techniques in learning biographical texts and MIPA 5 tenth class as a control class which would be taught without skimming and scanning techniques. In learning biographical texts. In accordance with the researchers' expectations, students showed improvement after being given treatment. Based on statistical calculations, it is known that there is an increase in the ability to read biographical texts of students in both classes. This can be evidenced by the results of the control class pre-test, which was originally 84.06 then increased to 86.00 post-test, while the experimental class pre-test results were lower at 83.56 then increased to 88.67 during the post-test. Although there was no significant difference between the post-test mean scores of the two classes, the experimental class showed a greater improvement in results after skimming, and scanning techniques were given to learning biographical material.
