Abstract

Speaking skill is an important skill, because by having good speaking it will be easier for someone to convey their ideas through spoken form in English. In the current pandemic period, all learning activities are carried out online, this is a challenge for teachers to pay attention to making strategies so that online learning activities, especially speaking teaching, can be carried out optimally. Therefore, this study aims to determine whether there is a significant difference in the results of speaking skills scores between eighth grade students of SMPN 13 Semarang who are taught using the Google Meet application and those who are not, in the 2021/2022 school year. This research is classified as a quantitative research with a quasi-experimental research design. This study involved 64 students from two groups, class 8A as the experimental group who was given treatment using the Google Meet application and class 8F as the control group who were taught conventionally through the WhatsApp group. In this study, data were obtained using the results of the pre-test and post-test. The results showed that there was a significant difference in the learning outcomes of speaking skills between students who were taught using the Google Meet application and those taught conventionally through WhatsApp groups. In calculating the hypothesis using a t-test with a significance of 5%, the results of t-count > t-table are 7.8843 > 1.66980, this research hypothesis is accepted. It can be concluded that the use of the Google Meet application in teaching speaking during the pandemic has been proven to improve the speaking skill scores of SMPN 13 Semarang students.
