Abstract

Writing an analytical exposition is the same as writing other type of texts. An analytical exposition should be meaningful to convince the readers. The objective of the study is to examine meanings developed in the eighth-semester students’ analytical exposition texts in the academic year of 2019/2020. This study is a discourse analysis in which the data collected are in the form of written texts. To examine the three metafunctions, the data were divided into clauses and analysed using theory by Halliday. The result of the study showed three points of conclusion. First, in term of MOOD and Modality, it finds that students successfully applied mood types since they use declarative mood in their texts although some clauses missed Mood element and they use medium level of modality which tells about their intention for the future. Second, in term of transitivity elements, they use material for telling about physical action. In line with the process, the goal dominates the participant. For the circumstance, the students mostly used location to tell actions take place. Third, the students successfully applied topical theme as the most types in their texts by putting nominal group as subject in the initial position. However, this study also finds out some clauses have no rheme which indicates that students have difficulty in developing Theme. In sum, analysing students’ text by using three metafunctions helps to understand the quality of the texts. Subsequently, it can be a reference for the students to develop their ability in writing.
