Abstract

This study aims to analyze grammatical cohesive devices' use in students' narrative texts. This study's objectives were to explain the use of the grammatical cohesion device and the difficulties the grade 9 students of SMP N 26 Semarang experienced in using cohesive devices and writing narrative text. The qualitative method was used in this research, to be precise, discourse analysis. Data collection was carried out with a documentation method, followed by a questionnaire with students and interviews with the teacher. Three texts from grade 9 students of SMP N 26 Semarang was chosen. The texts were analyzed based on Halliday and Hasan's (1976) theory and Thornbury's (2005). The findings show that students used references, conjunctions, and ellipsis. However, the use of ellipsis was found only once, and then no substitution devices were found. Furthermore, several errors were found in applying grammatical cohesion devices, such as personal reference, additive, and causal conjunction. In conclusion, it showed that SMP N 26 Semarang students are aware of using grammatical cohesion in their texts, but their understanding level is still low. To avoid this phenomenon, students should increase their understanding and practice applying cohesion markers by increasing their writing and reading activities for paragraphs or text both at school and outside school.
