Abstract
This research investigated the interpersonal meaning realized in the transcription of the speech ‘I Have a Dream’ by Martin Luther King. This research aimed to describe the types of interpersonal meaning realized in the speech “I Have a Dream” by Martin Luther King, how the interpersonal meaning realized in the speech, and why the speaker used interpersonal meaning in the speech. The research design was descriptive qualitative. The main sources of the data in this research were the speech video and also the transcription of the speech ‘I Have a Dream’ by Martin Luther King. Then, the data was analyzed by using these following steps: first, reading the transcription of the speech; second, analyzing the transcription of the speech; third, underlining the clauses of the speech transcription which contain interpersonal meaning; fourth, analyzing the underlined clauses through the Mood and Modality system; fifth, finding out how those types of interpersonal meaning were realized in the speech; and the last was drawing a conclusion why the speaker used those types of interpersonal meaning in the speech. The findings of the analysis showed that there are two types of interpersonal meaning realized in the speech ‘I Have a Dream’, those are Mood and Modality system. Mood system is realized in the form of Subject and Finite. Subject and Finite move around to establish the Mood Types. In Mr. King’ speech, Mood types are realized in the form of Declarative, Interrogative, and Imperative Mood. Meanwhile, Modality is realized in the form of modal verbs. Mood and Modality system are used by Mr. King in his speech in order to express his feelings, emotions, desire, attitudes, and judgments about the issue he brought forward.
