Abstract

This research is about the effectiveness of using movie “UP” as teaching media to improve students’ vocabulary. It is a quasi-experimental research. This research was conducted to find out the effectiveness of using movie “UP” as teaching media to improve students’ vocabulary in the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Grobogan in the academic year of 2018/2019. Based on the previous researchers that I have found such as (Margono, 2010; Yunita, 2010; Handayani, 2015; Fitri, 2009; Aisyarani, 2014; etc) few of them focus on conducted movie as technique to make students interesting in learning English and enrich them with the vocabulary. There were two groups, the experimental (X.1) and the control (X.2) groups. The experimental group was taught by using movie “UP” as teaching media, while in the control group was taught by using conventional method (using English book with translate the vocabulary). Both of groups were given a pre-test and post-test. The result of the pre-test and post-test then were analyzed by using T-test. The results of pre-test and post-test showed that the mean scores of experimental group was 50,1 then increased to be 79,7 while the control group was 50,3 increased to be 65,8. Based on the data analysis using t-test, there was a significant improvement of the students’ achievement after the implementation of movie “UP”. The result of t-table can be showed in the calculation by using t-test. The result showed sig.(2 tailed) value 0.000 was lower than 0,05. It was proven by using SPSS where t-value 6.734 while the t-table was 1.999 . it showed that t-value>t-table. It can be concluded that, there are a significant difference in the experimental group on the post-test. Since it is significant, the use of movie “UP” as teaching media is effective to improve students’ vocabulary in the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Grobogan in the academic year of 2018/2019. Based on the result, it is suggested for future researchers, they are expected to use this study as their reference to implement other researchers in the same field.
